The 1857-S quarter eagle has a low survival rate and fewer than 200 are known from an original mintage of 69,200. This date is usually seen in EF40 to AU50 grades and choice AU examples are very scarce. Pieces with original color and choice surfaces are very rare.
This gem slider shows pretty soft russet and green-gold colors over satiny surfaces. This coin has likely never been cleaned or dipped and this is unusual for this issue as most are very bright. A small scrape on the cheek of Liberty is really the only fault worth mention.
A CAC approved NGC AU58 brought $2,585 as Heritage 6/13: 5581 but this piece was brighter and less choice than the present example.
A great value when compared to the ubiquitous double eagle of this year.
CAC has approved eight in this grade with two finer.
