The 1857 quarter eagle is common in the lower Uncirculated grades and is even available, from time to time, in MS64. gems are very rare with likely not more than four to six known. The finest is a remarkable PCGS MS68 which realized $54,625 as Stacks Bowers 8/12: 11661.

This Gem example has a superb obverse with full, frosty luster and rich natural orange-gold color; the reverse is choice save for a small series of marks below ES OF in STATES OF. The strike is very sharp and the eye appeal is excellent. One wonders exactly how this coin survived as it was clearly carefully preserved since the time it was made.

The only PCGS MS65 1857 quarter eagle to ever cross the auction block was a Gold CAC example offered as Heritage 1/13: 6907 which I graded MS66 to MS66+; it realized $15,275.

Gem Us. gold coins from the years directly before the beginning of the Civil war are very unusual and, with the exception of some gold dollars, are almost never offered for sale.
