The 1856-S is the first collectible quarter eagle from the San Francisco mint given the extreme rarity of the 1854-S and the fact that none were made in 1855. The 1856-S is only moderately scarce in circulated grade but there are probably not more 12-15 known in Uncirculated including one or two gems.
This very well struck example is crisp and fresh with appealing medium orange-gold and reddish colors atop frosty luster. There are a few small ticks in he fields which are consistent with the grade, the most noticeable of which is located between the two final stars.
There have been four auction records for MS61 examples of tis date since 2009 with one selling for $3,565 and the others all realizing $3,738. None of these were for CAC approved coins.
With the exception of the double eagle denomination, all early San Francisco gold coins are rare and undervalued in Uncirculated grades and few can be found which are CAC quality.
CAC has approved one in this grade with three finer.
