This low mintage issue (only 7,295 were made) has fewer than 200 survivors known and most are seen in the EF40 to AU53 range. The 1854-C quarter eagles is hard to locate with choice surfaces and natural deep color.
This is one of the few truly original 1854-C quarter eagles I have seen and it shows lovely deep reddish russet colors, in similar hues, on the obverse and the reverse. The obverse is choice and very well detailed with nearly full radial lines in the stars; the central reverse is not as well struck and this gives the unfair impression of wear. Both sides show no serious marks and have underlying luster. A really pleasing coin for the date and grade.
