The 1852-O is comparable in overall rarity to the 1850-O and 1851-O. In higher grades, the 1852-O is quite scarce. Most of the examples graded AU58 by both services are dipped and show obvious wear.
This “gem slider” has the appearance of an MS61 to MS62. It is well struck with good central detail and it has clearly never been dipped as evidenced by its deep honey-gold color. Both sides are frosty and show just a few small, scattered abrasions.
The only PCGS AU58 example to sell at auction since late 2011 was Heritage 2/14: 5188 which brought $2,115; this coin wasn’t approved by CAC nor was it is choice and original as the current example.
A smart alternative to an Uncirculated example.
CAC has approved 10 in this grade with four finer.
