The 1852-C is a scarcer quarter eagle with fewer than 200 known from the original mintage of 9,772. This date is very scarce in the higher AU grades and it is extremely rarein Uncirculated with just three or four known.

This choice AU example has excellent detail for the issue and it is one of the better struck 1852-C quarter eagles that I can recall having seen. The planchet is of better quality than most seen as well and there is just a bit of the usual roughness in the fields. A healthy amount of luster remains below light golden-orange color and the marks are limited to some light scuffing in the fields.

The last PCGS AU58 example to sell at auction was ex Heritage 2/12: 4638 which brought $6,038. Only two PCGS 58s have sold at auction since the beginning of 2008 with the other bringing $6,325 in Heritage’s 7/09 event.

With Uncirculated examples of this date being essentially unavailable, this is just about the best available 1852-C quarter eagle.
