The 1850-D is one of the more available Dahlonega quarter eagles from this decade but it is still considerably scarcer than the “common” dates from the 1840′s such as the 1843-D, 1844-D, 1845-D, 1847-D and 1848-D. There were a total of12,148 pieces struck and fewer than 200 are known today. The typical 1850-D quarter eagle grades EF40 to AU50 and is characertized by bright, unappealing surfaces.
This is a beautiful fresh example with vibrant natural sunset-gold and orange colors seen on the obverse and reverse. Both sides show a considerable amount of mint luster for the grade and with the exception of a few small marks behind the head of the eagle, the surfaces are very clean. This piece has more eye appeal than coins I see in AU58 holders and it represents the epitome of quality for the grade.
There have been no PCGS AU55 1850-D quarter eagles sold at auction since B+M 6/07: 2534, which was non-CAC approved. It sold for $4,198.
Regardles of date, it is extremely difficult to locate Dahlonega quarter eagles in this grade with this degree of originality and eye appeal. A beautiful and desirable coin for the specialist.
CAC has approved six in this grade with six finer.
