While not as rare as other Philadelphia quarter eagles such as the 1844, 1846 and 1848, the 1849 is still far from common, especially in Uncirculated. There are probably no more than a dozen or so 1849 quarter eagles known in Uncirculated with the finest of these grading MS63.
This is a nice, strictly Uncirculated example with rich mint frost and medium natural green-gold and orange colors. A few small ticks in the left obverse field limit the grade but this well struck piece gives a good naked-eye impression.
Two NGC MS61 examples have been sold at auction in the last year. Heritage 2/14: 4555 brought $2,372 while Heritage 5/13: 4113 realized $2,350. In my opinion, the present example exceeds both in terms of quality.
For under $3,000, this is a very good value as are many of the Philadelphia quarter eagles from this era.
