Variety 11-N. North Georgia collection pedigree.

While available in EF40 through AU50 grades, this date is rare in the higher AU grades and very rare in Uncirculated. There are an estimated five or six known in Mint State with the finest grading MS62.

As is sometimes the case with this date (as well as the 1847-D) the coloration is deep and vivid. This piece has rich mottled green-gold hues, in slightly different configurations, on the obverse and reverse. There is some natural haze seen on both sides (this has been on the coin for over a decade; see the pedigree below) and the strike is sharp and even for the issue. There is a small curved scratch on the obverse up from the truncation past the first star which keeps this piece from a higher grade.

No PCGS MS60 example of the 1849-D quarter eagle has been sold at auction since this coin was last offered in 2001; see the pedigree below for more information.

A well-known and exciting example for the serious Dahlonega quarter eagle collector. This piece has been in the same PCGS holder since 1999!

Ex Heritage 2001 FUN: 8086 (where it sold for $13,800), Heritage 1999 FUN: 7465 (where it sold for $21,000), North Georgia collection, Mid American 8/91: 653, Cornerstone collection.

This is the only Uncirculated 1849-D quarter eagle to have been approved by CAC.
