This low mintage date (just 10,945 struck) is one of the scarcer Dahlonega quarter eagles from the mid-to-late 1840′s. It is seen most often in the EF40 to AU50 range. For some reason, along with the 1847-D, it is a date seen more often than one might expect with nice original surfaces and color.
This is a clean, evenly worn example with nice medium greenish-gold color. A small scratch in the left obverse field knocks this from an otherwise-deserved EF45 grade.
There have been no PCGS EF40 1849-D quarter eagles sold at auction since Heritage 7/08: 9488 which brought $2,400.
A nice, affordable example of this popular and slightly scarcer issue.
