The 1849-D is a much scarcer date than the 1844-D through 1848-D quarter eagles although it doesn’t sell for a huge premium in the higher AU grades. Properly graded AU58 pieces are very scarce and the 1849-D is almost impossible to find in Uncirculated.

This very lustrous example is one of the best struck 1849-D quarter eagles that I have seen with almost none of the peripheral weakness which is essentially diagnostic for the issue. The lightly marked surfaces are slightly reflective and show medium orange-gold color which is deepest on the right obverse.

The last PCGS AU58 example to sell at auction was a non-CAC piece offered as Stacks Bowers 2011 ANA: 9217 which realized a strong $7,188. No PCGS AU58 with CAC approval has ever sold at auction.

A solid addition to a high quality date set of Dahlonega quarter eagles.

CAC has approved three in this grade with only one finer (MS60 is finest).
