Only 7,497 examples were struck and the 1848 quarter eagle is actually offered for sale with slightly less frequency (in higher grades) than its celebrated counterpart the 1848 CAL.

This lightly worn, frosty example shows some russet color with the reverse a bit deeper in hue than the obverse. The surfaces are very clean and this is unusual for this issue as most are “ticky” with numerous small marks in the fields.

The last APR for a PCGS AU53 1848 quarter eagle is Heritage 1/12: 4791 which brought $2,530. That example was not approved by CAC and while encased in an old green label holder, it had questionable color. An NGC 55 brought $2,760 in Heritage’s 5/12 sale.

As with so many of the Philadelphia quarter eagles from this era, the 1848 is an excellent value.

This is the only example in this grade approved by CAC; two finer have been approved as well.
