The 1848-D is among the more available Dahlonega quarter eagles in terms of its overall and high grade rarity. No quarter eagle from this mint is common, however, in properly graded MS62 and only six have been graded as such by PCGS with six more graded MS63 (and none higher).

This choice, frosty example exhibits natural light green-gold color with slightly richer hues seen at the borders. The strike is sharp as is common with this issue and the surfaces show just a few small scuffs.

There have been nine auction appearances for this date in PCGS MS62 between 2006 and the present; probably due to the same one or two coins being offered multiple times. Prices realized have ranged from a low of $9,694 to a high of $14,950 with most in the $11,000-12,000 range.

If you have been searching for a single high grade Dahlonega quarter eagle for your type set, this would make an excellent choice due to its sharpness of strike and lovely overall appearance. It is also a coin which would not look out of place in a world-class date set of quarter eagles with very few known finer than this.
