The 1848-C is a fairly common issue in the Charlotte quarter eagle series but it is not often seen in AU grades and even less often with a full strike and choice, naturally colored surfaces.
This deep green-gold example is well struck save for the eagle’s right leg and the claws. It appears to have never been dipped or lightened and there is dirt within the loops of the 8′s in the date. This piece has the skin and remaining luster of an AU55 but it shows some old marks in the obverse fields which limit the grade.
The last NGC AU50 to sell at auction was this exact coin which realized $3,055 as Heritage 9/15: 5031.
A nice, affordable piece which is sufficient for type purposes or nice enough for an advanced date set of Charlotte quarter eagles.
