The 1847-C is the most common Charlotte quarter eagle by a large margin which makes it ideal for type purposes. It is seen fairly often in the lower AU grades but it is not easy to find in AU55 and higher, especially with natural color and choice surfaces.
This is a deep green-gold example with beautiful original color and a good deal of dirt neatly hidden in the recesses of the obverse and reverse borders. The strike is totally sharp and the surfaces are very clean save for a few tiny ticks on and above the portrait.
The last AU55 example of this date to sell at auction was a non-CAC PCGS piece which realized $3,114 as Stacks Bowers 12/13: 3522. A much inferior NGC AU58 sold for $3,819 as Heritage 1/14: 6435.
This is the only 1847-C quarter eagle in any grade to receive the + designation and it is easy to see why as this coin is exceptionally choice for the grade.
CAC has approved six examples in AU55 (including this 55+) and six finer.
