The 1846-C is the third rarest quarter eagle from this mint after the 1843-C Small Date and the 1855-C. Only 4,808 were made and as few as 100 exist with most in the VF-EF range. This is one of the hardest quarter eagles from this mint to find with original color and surfaces.

This is one of the choices, most original EF examples of this date that I have seen. It shows lovely deep green-gold and yellow colors with some dirt encrusted in the protected areas. The strike is well above average for the date and the surfaces are choice save for a few old, hidden marks in the upper reverse field. Some roughness appears around the date and this is mint-made with all examples showing this.

The last PCGS EF456 to sell at auction was ex Heritage 2/06: 2616 which brought $3,450. It was far less choice than the current example.

CAC has only approved three examples of this date in all grades which is a fitting testament to its rarity with great eye appeal.

This is the only 1846-C approved by CAC in this grade with just one finer (AU58).
