RARE UNCIRCULATED 1845-D QUARTER EAGLE

Variety 6-J.

The 1845-D is tied for 13th rarest of 20 issues of this type in higher grades. Of the 200-250 which are believed to exist, fewer than 10 are in Uncirculated and most of these are bright, dipped coins in MS60 and MS61 holders.

This well struck example is choice and appealing with natural medium russet color which is a bit deeper on the reverse than on the obverse. The central detail is uncommonly bold for the issue and there is a good deal of mint luster seen on both sides.

Only three MS61 1845-D (all graded by PCGS) have been sold at auction since late 2010. The most recent sale was Heritage 1/12: 6110 at $9,775.

This would make an excellent example for a sophisticated date collector of Dahlonega quarter eagles.
