The 1844-D is one of the more available quarter eagles from the Dahlonega mint. It is available in EF and the lower AU grades but it is hard to find with original color and choice surfaces.

This coin has the body of an AU53 to AU55 but it has been very conservatively graded by PCGS due to softness of strike at the centers. Around one of every four or five 1844-D quarter eagles show this weakness but this coin’s lovely natural reddish-gold color and choice surfaces more than make up for it.

The last PCGS EF45 example to sell at auction was ex Goldberg 1/14: 1699 and this coin (without CAC approval) brought $2,468. Only three PCGS EF45′s have sold at auction since the start of 2005.

A perfect type coin for the collector who wants a truly choice Dahlonega quarter eagle.

CAC has approved three in this grade with 16 finer.
