The 1844-D is one of the more available quarter eagles from the Dahlonega mint in circulated grades. Properly graded AU58 pieces are scarce ad those which show natural color and which have choice surfaces are not often seen.
This attractive slider likely never entered circulation but there is just a slight amount of friction seen on the high spots of the obverse. Both the obverse and the reverse are very attractively toned in deep green-gold shades and there is a considerable amount of frosty luster beneath this color. The surfaces are choice and this is really a perfect coin for the grade.
An NGC AU58 with CAC approval sold for $4,600 as Heritage 4/12: 6373. Only one PCGS AU58 has been auctioned since 2003 and it brought $4,715 as Goldberg 2/06: 928.
This is a perfect type coin for the collector who wants a really choice circulated Dahlonega quarter eagle.
CAC has approved four in this grade with five finer.
