Variety 5-I.

The 1844-D is one of the more available dates in the Dahlonega series but it likely that fewer than 10-15% of the survivors have natural color and choice surfaces.

This is a very pleasing, totally fresh example with deep russet splashes at the peripheral obverse; the reverse is more lightly toned. Both sides have a nice green-gold appearance and there is some luster in the protected areas. I feel this coin is actually an AU50 to AU53 but it shows characteristic weakness of strike at the centers which is unfairly interpreted as wear by NGC. A few small marks in the left obverse field do not detract.

The last CAC approved EF45 example of this date to cross the auction block was a nice PCGS coin which sold for $2,585 as Heritage 2014: 3255.

For the collector with a budget of around $3,000, this is an unimprovable example of a Dahlonega quarter eagle.

CAC has approved four in this grade (EF45) with 17 finer.
