The 1844-C is one of the half dozen rarest quarter eagles from the Charlotte mint. It is usually seen in the EF to lower AU grade range and most often with poor striking detail, inferior luster and poor overall eye appeal.

This attractive, original example shows natural medium green-gold colors on both sides with a decent amount of natural dirt in the reverse recesses. The strike is typical for the issue with weakness on some of the stars and at the centers with the obverse shaper overall than the reverse. With the exception of a short, blunt mark below ES in STATES, the surfaces are choice.

The only auction record since the middle of 2013 for an 1844-C quarter eagle in PCGS AU53 is for a very low end piece which went cheaply at $4,177 as Stacks Bowers 3/15: 397.

A nice 1844-C quarter eagle which would fit into nearly any set of better quality Charlotte quarter eagles.
