CURIOUSLY RARE HIGH GRADE 1843 QUARTER EAGLE

Despite a high (reported) mintage of 100,506 coins, the 1843 quarter eagle is a scarce, undervalued issue which is curiously rare in Uncirculated grades. There are likely no more than a dozen known in Uncirculated–mostly–in MS60 to MS62–and the clear finest known is the PCGS MS64 which brought $12,650 as Bass II: 345 back in October, 1999.

This very well struck example is sharply struck and it possesses very pleasing natural yellow-gold color which is even and unadulterated. There are just a few too many small scuffs to grade this coin MS63 but it is clearly well above average for an MS62 quarter eagle of this era.

Only one PCGS MS62 has sold at auction since May 2007 and it brought $3,236 as Heritage 1/15: 6867; it appeared to have been stripped and had a few detracting black spots on the surfaces.

This is great value for less than $5,000 and it is likely within the Condition Census for the issue.

CAC has approved two in this grade with none finer.
