Despite a relatively large mintage of slightly over 100,000 coins, the 1843 is much scarcer than most collectors realize, especially in Uncirculated. There are probably not more than 10-12 known in Uncirculated with most in the MS60 to MS62 range.
This is a very fresh example with lovely deep, even green-gold and orange hues. The strike is as sharp as one could hope for and there are just a few small ticks in the fields. A small arcing area of toning in the right obverse field serves as quick identification.
There has not been a PCGS MS61 example of this date sold at auction since Heritage 9/06: 3130 brought $2,560. No CAC approved MS61 1843 quarter eagle has sold at auction.
There are some wonderful values in the Liberty Quarter eagle series and this is certainly among the better of these.
CAC has approved two in this grade with one finer.
