Large Date variety.

There are two varieties of quarter eagle struck by the New Orleans mint in 1843: the common Small Date and the scarce Large Date. The Large Date is the second hardest quarter eagle to find from this mint in terms of overall rarity and it is not often seen above AU55.

This is an extremely choice “slider” with rich natural green-gold color atop lovely frosty surfaces. There is just a hint of friction seen on the high spots of the obverse; the reverse is “new” and nearly choice. There is a small area of weakness at the central obverse which is typical for this issue.

There have been a number of AU58 examples of this issue sold at auction in the last few years but only three PCGS coins since early 2011.

A choice example of this key New Orleans quarter eagle.

CAC has approved five in this grade with 10 finer.

Ex Heritage 10/11: 4653 where it sold for $4,600.
