Variety 4-F; Small Mintmark.
The 1843-D is the most common quarter eagle from this mint, which makes it an ideal issue for type purposes. While seemingly available in the higher AU grades, I feel that properly graded AU55 to AU58 pieces are fairly scarce and this is due to the fact that most seen in holders are bright and processed.
This is an extremely choice example with deep, even green-gold which is exactly “right” for the issue. On both sides, there is dirt in the protected areas and the surfaces are immaculate with a virtual absence of abrasions. The strike is as sharp as you will see on a quarter eagle from this mint and the overall eye appeal is very high. In summary, this is a great looking coin!
The last 1843-D quarter eagle in NGC AU58 to sell at auction was Heritage 8/12: 4467, which realized $3,290.
If you are putting together a type set of Dahlonega coinage and you are looking for an attractive quarter eagle, you would be hard-pressed to find a more appropriate coin than this, especially at this price point.
