CHOICE AU 1843-C LARGE DATE QUARTER EAGLE
Varieties of this issue are known with a Small Date and a Large Date. The former is much rarer than the latter. The 1843-C Large Date is, in fact, among the more available dates in the Charlotte quarter eagle series although it becomes scarce in the higher AU grades and is rare in Uncirculated.
This piece shows a typical strike for the issue with noticeable weakness at the centers, particularly on the reverse. Both sides are lustrous and exhibit splashes of natural orange-gold. There are a few small scuffs in the left obverse field but the surfaces are choice overall.
Two PCGS AU55 examples have sold since 2011–both CAC approved–and they brought $3,525 (in 2014) and $3,335 (in 2011).
A nice type coin for the collector who wants a choice C mint quarter eagle not dated 1847-C.
