The 1842-D is one of three rare early quarter eagles from this mint and it is exceeded only by the 1840-D and the 1841-D for the crown of rarest issue from this decade. It is not often seen above AU50 to AU53 and it is one of the few southern branch mint coins which is unknown in unequivocal Mint State grades.

This well struck example show nice russet and medium orange-gold hues. There are a few small hairlines in the left obverse field which limit the grade; the reverse is very choice and it grades AU55 on its own.

Only one PCGS AU50 example of this date has sold at auction since 2007: Heritage 2/13: 3923 realized $6,463.

This date is seldom offered for sale in PCGS holders above EF40 to EF45 and it remains in strong demand among serious collectors of Dahlonega quarter eagles.
