Only 6,729 examples were produced and the 1842-C is one of the truly scarce issues in the Charlotte quarter eagle series. It is most often seen in VF-EF grades and seldom with good eye appeal.

This is an above average example for the date and grade with a typical blurry strike at the centers. The slightly abraded surfaces show medium golden-orange color with some hints of remaining luster. A few marks on the reverse can be seen in the field above the eagle’s head.

The last EF45 example of this date to sell at auction was ex Goldberg 2/12: 1170 where a PCGS graded example brought $4,370. A total of six examples in EF45 have been sold at auction since the beginning of 2006.

In many of the higher quality sets of Charlotte quarter eagles that I have assembled for collectors, the 1842-C has proven to be the most difficult to locate and not many have passed through my inventory in the past few years.
