RARE UNCIRCULATED 1850 HALF EAGLE

The 1850 is the rarest half eagle made at the Philadelphia mint between 1843 and the rare Civil War issues of 1862 through 1865. There are fewer than a dozen known in properly graded Uncirculated and nearly all of these are in the MS60 to MS62 range. The undisputed finest known is the NGC MS65 Eliasberg/Milas coin which I bought for $54,050 in the 2015 CSNS Heritage sale.

This very well struck example has extremely choice surfaces seen below delicate natural yellow-gold color which is deepest at the obverse border. The luster is satiny and unbroken and this is a truly "new" coin and not a slider which has morphed into a "61."

No PCGS MS61 1850 half eagle has sold at auction since July 2007 when Heritage sold an example for $4,700. The Bass II: 1010 coin, also graded MS61 by PCGS, realized $3,680 all the way back in October 1999.

This seems like great value--as do so many No Motto half eagles and eagles from the Philadelphia mint.
