The 1838 is numismatically significant as the final year of issue for the Philadelphia Classic Head half eagles. It is not easy to locate in properly grade AU58 and many so-graded examples are not choice.
This choice slider has no real wear and sports the look of a Choice Uncirculated coin but there is some light friction seen on the cheek of Liberty. Both sides are very clean and frosty with nice even natural golden hues seen. The eye appeal is outstanding.
The last NGC/CAC AU58 1838 half eagle to sell at auction realized $3,290 as Heritage 3/16: 4465.
This series has become popular and many collectors are focusing on choice, original AU58 coins.
CAC has approved 18 in this grade with 14 finer.
