136 Proofs were struck; around half of these exist.

Mintage figures for gold dollar and quarter eagles increased in the 1880′s and 1890′s due to the popularity of coin collecting and the relative affordability of these two denominations. Still, any pre-1900 quarter eagle is rare as a Proof, particularly in Gem.

This is a wonderful example which offers some of the strongest black and white contrast I can recall having seen on a quarter eagle of this era. The surfaces are extremely clean with no hairlines or mint-made imperfections and the frosted cheek is smooth and clean.

The all-time auction record for a Proof-66 Deep Cameo for this date is $27,600 set by an NGC coin back in January 2006.

If you have been looking for a true Gem Proof Liberty Head quarter eagle, give this coin some consideration as it has that “across the room” look that connoisseurs of the series gravitate towards.

CAC has approved three in this grade with seven higher.
