VERY RARE PROOF 1884 QUARTER EAGLE

Old Green Holder; by today’s standards I grade this coin PR64 to PR64+ and would assign it a cameo designation.

A total of 73 Proofs were made of which around half of these (i.e., three dozen) are known. The typical Proof 1884 quarter eagle grades PR64 to PR65 but few are original as the grading services will not designate deeply toned pieces as DCAM. This piece is a reflective borderline Gem with no significant hairlines and nice natural medium orange-gold color. This coin would easily grade a full PR65 or even higher were it not for a large mint-made lintmark located on the obverse between stars nine and eleven as well as the bun.

This piece is pedigreed to the famous Ed Trompeter collection and it sold at auction in 1992 (see below) for $9,350.

A neat piece of Proof gold with a lot of bells and whistles included: strong pedigree, old green holder, CAC approval and genuine scarcity.

Ex Superior 2/92: 64 at $9,350; obtained by Ed Trompeter at Auction ’86.

CAC has approved three non-cameo examples in this grade with one higher (PR65).
