Only 1,920 business strikes were made and the low mintage 1883 is arguably the rarest Liberty Head quarter eagle struck after 1875.
This is a late die state which lacks the prooflike fields seen on many business strikes of this date. The surfaces are far less abraded than normal and the color, a rich russet hue deepening at the borders, is natural and uncommonly appealing for the date.
No PCGS AU53′s have ever appeared at public auction. A low end NGC AU53 sold for $2,056 as Heritage 11/12: 4803.
For less than $3,000 this coin offers the collector a lot of bang for the buck.
CAC has approved one in this grade with just two finer.
