Only 2,996 were struck and, as with many of the quarter eagles from the early part of the 1880′s, the 1880 is a scarce, undervalued coin.

This issue is generally found well made and this example has rich, frosty reflective surfaces with bold, crisp detail seen on both sides. There are a few ticks in the fields which limit the grade and a small mint-made copper spot at the center of the obverse serves as ready identification.

The last PCGS/CAC MS63 to sell at auction was Heritage 7/09: 2425 which realized $3,220. The present example is the only other PCGS MS63 1880 quarter eagle with CAC approval.

I am noticing increased demand for coins such as this, especially at this price point.

CAC has approved two in this grade with two finer (MS64 and MS65).
