The market for Liberty Head double eagles was forever changed by the discovery of thousands of choice to gem 1857-S double eagles. The 1857-S quickly went from a rarity in higher grades to the most common issue of this era. Today’s generation of collectors is truly fortunate to be able to obtain such a great coin at such a reasonable price!
This hand selected example is a virtual Gem with rich orange-gold toning at the borders and very frosty surfaces. A few ticks can be seen on the obverse while the reverse, on its own account, grades at least MS65 if not higher.
PCGS MS64 SSCA 1857-S double eagles typically bring in the $9,500-10,500 range depending on quality and if they have a full accompanying set of particulars.
This example is accompanied by the original box of issue but it is missing the COA. It is also approved by CAC.
