Due to the existence of thousands of examples from the S.S. Central America, the 1857-S is now among the most available Type One double eagles. Ironically, non-shipwreck coins are rarer than their shipwreck counterparts.
This is a choice example with original surfaces. It is clearly not from the SSCA wreck and it is lightly worn with good luster and pleasing medium yellow-gold color. I feel PCGS was conservative in their grade of this coin as it shows virtually no wear and has more than enough luster to grade AU58.
A comparable PCGS AU55 example with CAC approval recently brought $3,305 as Heritage 1/13: 7474.
A nice, affordable Type One double eagle.
CAC has approved eight in this grade with 46 finer; most of these are from the S.S. Central America.
