The 1857 is not as scarce as the 1855 or 1856 but it remains overlooked, particularly in higher grades. It is seen most often in EF and the lower AU grades and properly graded AU58′s are very scarce. In Uncirculated, this date is rare and seldom offered for sale.
This high end “slider” example has the appearance of an MS61 to MS62 with just the slightest amount of friction on the high spots. It is frosty and struck in light orange gold with choice surfaces lacking the usual dense abrasions.
Only two PCGS AU58 1857 double eagles have sold at auction since July 2009 and the last one realized $5,875 as Heritage 7/13: 3721. There are no auction records for a CAC approved AU58 from either service.
If you can find a nice PCGS MS61 1857 double eagle, it will cost $12,500-15,000.
CAC has approved 12 in this grade with eight finer.
