The 1857 is an underappreciated issue which has only recently recognized by specialists as being significantly scarcer than the 1851 through 1853 issues and comparable to the 1858 and 1858 double eagles in terms of overall rarity.
This well struck example is bright and frosty with natural light orange-gold color accentuated by swaths of deeper color from 6:00 to 12:00 on the obverse border. There are scattered some scuffs consistent with the assigned grade.
Only two PCGS AU55 1857 double eagles sold at auction in 2015 and both realized $3,525.
