All of the Philadelphia Liberty Head double eagles made between 1855 and 1859 are scarce and undervalued. The 1857 is one of the more available of these issues but it remains a hard coin to find in AU55 and up and a rare issue in Uncirculated.
This light orange-gold example is very lustrous with a slightly reflective sheen seen near the portrait. There is some light scuffing in the fields that limits the grade but this piece has alot of body for an AU55 and it is certainly better than most of the examples that I see in AU55 holders.
The last two APR’s for NGC AU55 1857 double eagles are $3,450 (for a non-CAC) and $3,968 (for a coin with CAC approval).
It is becoming hard to locate nice 1857 double eagles for less than $4,000.
