Thanks to the discovery of many examples in the SS Central America shipwreck, the 1856-S is now a readily available Type One issue. Still, it is many times scarcer than the ubiquitous 1857-S.
This is a non-shipwreck example with a good deal of natural luster showing. In fact, the coin seems very conservatively graded and I have seen worse examples of this date in AU50 and even AU53 holders. The surfaces are lightly scuffed and the color is a pleasing medium orange-gold with vivid underflashes of rose.
The last PCGS EF45 example of this date with CAC approval to sell at auction was Heritage 2/13: 4945, which brought $2,585. I believe that the present example is a nicer coin.
This is a good value for the Type One double eagle collector who is looking for a nice 1856-S at less than $3,000.
CAC has approved six in tis grade with 22 finer.
