Along with the 1855 and 1857, the 1856 is a scarce and undervalued Philadelphia Type One issue which is not often seen in AU grades and almost never with natural color and surfaces.
This very choice example shows rich and extremely pleasing reddish-gold color on the obverse and reverse. It has enough luster and body to suggest an AU53 or even an AU55 grade but NGC has conservatively graded it due, I would suspect, to the presence of a few reeding marks on the face and neck of Liberty. A small copper toning spot near star four on the obverse is mint-made.
There have been no undamaged AU50 examples of this date sold auction since 2009.
If you are a double eagle collector and you like scarce, affordable coins with good color, this 1856 is for you!
CAC has approved two in this grade with 15 finer.
