The 1855-S is one of the few San Francisco double eagles from this decade whose rarity profile hasn’t been dramatically changed as the result of shipwrecks. It fremains moderately scarce in the higher AU grades and rare in Uncirculated.
If you are familiar with this date, you will know that it typically comes bright and beat-up. This examples show pleasing natural green-gold and orange hues and has very choice surfaces. The detail is excellent with much clearer hair strands than normal.
The last APR for an NGC AU55 1855-S double eagle is Heritage 3/12: 4204, which sold for $3,450.
This is a pleasing early S mint Type One double eagle which is numismatically significant as the second issue from this facility.
