VERY CHOICE SLIDER 1855 DOUBLE EAGLE
The 1855 double eagle is not often seen above AU53 to AU55 and properly graded AU58′s with original color and choice surfaces are quite scarce. This date is very rare and expensive in Uncirculated, making this nice slider an important coin for the savvy Type One collector.
This example is very close to being fully Uncirculated as it shows only minor handling marks and slight friction on the high spots. The color is a nice light orange-gold shading to rose and green and the strike is outstanding. The surfaces are especially clean for the date with the only marks of note appearing on the chin and cheekbone of Liberty. I am convinced this piece never saw actual circulation.
Only five PCGS AU58′s have sold at auction since the start of 2011 and none were approved by CAC. The last of these to sell brought $4,935 as Heritage 1/15: 7389. A CAC approved NGC AU58 brought $8,225 as Heritage 2014 ANA: 4072.
Searching through my records, I note that I have only handled a small number of nicer 1855 double eagles in the last decade and all those coins were priced in the low five figures.
CAC has approved nine in this grade with only four finer.
