Along with the 1856, the 1855 is one of my favorite “sleeper” dates in the Type One double eagle series. It is seen most often in the EF45 to AU55 range but even then, most examples are low end with bright, processed surfaces and considerable scuffiness.
This is a solid coin for the grade with moderately abraded surfaces and nice medium green-gold and light orange color. An AU55 grade would be probable were it not for a small reeding mark on Liberty’s chin.
No PCGS AU53 1855 double eagles have sold at auction since the Heritage 9/08 sale.
Good value in a series where value is becoming harder to find.
CAC has approved two in AU53 with seven finer.
