I have long been a fan of this date and I regard it as one of the rarest Type One issues from the Philadelphia mint. The 1855 double eagle is scarce in properly graded AU55, especially with natural color and choice surfaces.
This example has a “Euro” appearance with deep orange-gold surfaces contrasted by darker hues on the relief details. Both sides are well detailed and lustrous with fewer marks than usual; the only abrasions worth noting is an old scrape from the throat out into the field towards star two on the obverse.
Four AU53 examples of this date have sold at auction since 12/13 with a low of $2,820 and a high of $3,290. None of these four coins had been approved by CAC.
At current price levels, nice 1855 double eagles remain excellent value.
CAC has approved two in this grade with 13 finer.
