Small Date variety; Repunched Date (1854/154) and designated as such by PCGS.
The 1854 Small Date is the more common of the two major varieties of 1854 double eagles. It is common in the lower AU grades but it is scarce in properly graded AU58 with natural color and surfaces. Uncirculated examples are rare and a CAC approved PCGS MS61, if available, would cost around $12,500.
This very choice slider shows nearly full luster and the surfaces are free of the typical deep abrasions seen on this issue. The color is a pleasing light yellow gold and it is a welcome exception to the bleached-out appearance seen on so many Type One double eagles.
This is a later die state of the 1854/154 variety but the repunching on all three digits is still plainly visible. In AU58, this variety is very rare and I have only seen a handful finer than this.
An exciting coin for the advanced Type One specialist.
CAC has approved 13 in this grade with just six finer.
