AFFORDABLE 1853/2 DOUBLE EAGLE
The 1853/2 is the only overdated issue in the entire Liberty Head double eagle series. It is scarce in all grades but it is almost never seen in affordable collector grades and even less often with natural color and choice surfaces.
This piece is clean and evenly worn with enough detail to suggest a VF35 to EF40 grade. It shows attractive natural russet color and there are no severe marks seen on either the obverse or the reverse. The diagnostic die dot below the R in LIBERTY is clear to the naked eye and is indicative of the true overdate variety.
No VF30 has ever sold at auction. An NGC VF20 brought $2,027 as Heritage 9/13: 26353 while an NGC VF35 realized $2,013 as Heritage 10/09: 1641.
If you are a collector on a budget, the chances are good that you never thought you would be able to afford an 1853/2 double eagle, especially one with the desirable PCGS/CAC combination.
CAC has approved this one coin in VF30 with another 18 finer.
