The 1853/’2′ is the only recognized overdate in the entire Liberty Head eagle series. It is most easily recognized by the presence of a large die dot below the right foot of the R in LIBERTY. It is scarce in all grades and it is very hard to find in the popular collector range of EF40 to AU50, especially with natural color and acceptable surfaces.

This natural light orange-gold example shows a lot of luster for the grade and it looks more like an AU50 than an EF45. The fields are a bit on the baggy side but there are no dense or deep marks and the eye appeal is outstanding for the date and grade.

Only two PCGS EF45′s have sold at auction since 2010. The most recent of these, ex Heritage 2/15: 4217, realized $4,465 while Heritage 1/14: 7023 brought $4,700. No CAC approved PCGS EF45 has ever sold at auction.

This is likely the best available quality for this popular variety for less than $7,500.

CAC has approved three in this grade with 12 finer.
