POPULAR 1853/2 OVERDATE DOUBLE EAGLE
The 1853/2 is the only recognized overdate in the entire Liberty Head series. It is seen most often in EF40 to AU50 range and it is a hard issue to find with good eye appeal.
This example is a bit weakly struck but it shows enough luster to more than adequately justify its assigned grade. The color is a pale golden-russet and orange-gold hue and the surfaces are clean save for some light scuffs in the left obverse field.
The most recent auction record for a PCGS EF45 example of this variety is Heritage 3/15: 4217 which brought $4,465.
This is the best available quality for this scarce variety at under $5,000.
