The 1853/2 is numismatically significant as the only overdated issue in the entire Liberty Head double eagle series. It is scarce in all grades and it is almost never seen above the AU53 to AU55 level. Attribution can be established by the presence of a mint-made die dot below the right foot of the R in LIBERTY.
This is a pleasing coin for the grade with ample luster and a touch of pale rose and light orange-gold color. This variety is usually seen with poor luster and scuffy fields and this example has unusually mark-free surfaces coupled with above-average luster.
No PCGS AU50 example has sold at auction since July 2010 and the last NGC 50 brought $5,511 as Stacks Bowers 6/14: 2599.
This variety is missing in most collections of Type One double eagles and it has the added level of demand from overdate collectors who are seeking nice examples for their sets.
